[01] UNSG - CYPRUS LEADERS - GENEVA - MEETING
A joint meeting between UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Cyprus
President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu
will take place Thursday in Geneva, in the context of direct talks on
the Cyprus problem.
Special Advisor of the UN Secretary General Alexander Downer had on
Wednesday in Geneva separate meetings with President Christofias and
the Turkish Cypriot leader. After his meeting with the President,
Downer said that during the meeting on Thursday the UN would try to
revitalise the process, to give more life and better prospects of
success.
President Christofias is accompanied by Presidential Commissioner
George Iacovou, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, Foreign
Ministry Permanent Secretary and member of the negotiating team Nikos
Emiliou and member of his Diplomatic Office Menelaos Menelaou.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied
its northern third. UN-backed talks for a mutually agreed settlement to
the problem of Cyprus began in September 2008.
