  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - TURKEY - DEADLOCK

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou said that the continuing Turkish intransigence leads the negotiation process, aiming at finding a comprehensive solution in the Cyprus problem, to stagnation and deadlock.

Omirou was speaking in the memorial service of Cypriot National Guard chief Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis and four other officers that were killed in a helicopter accident in Cyprus, in 2002.

We declare our steadfast refusal to accept the faits accomplis of the Turkish crime and our insistence on a democratic, functional and viable solution, on the basis of the principles of international and European law, a solution that our people deserve, said Omirou.

Moreover, in statements to the press, Omirou said that there is not much room for optimism regarding the meeting in the Swiss city of Geneva between the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervish Eroglu, due to Turkeys stance vis-a-vis the negotiation process during the last two and half years.

    [02] CYPRUS AIRWAYS - ERBIL - FLIGHTS

A special flight of Cyprus Airways was warmly welcomed by airport authorities of the Iraqi Kurdish capital Erbil and representatives of the countrys biggest tour organizer Merjan.

The Cypriot flight carrier is starting commercial flights to Erbil on Monday, July 4, and a delegation, consisting of Cyprus Airways executives, state officials, tour organizers and media representatives inaugurated the connection last Friday.

Upon arrival, an official ceremony was held at the airport to celebrate the initiation of flights between Cyprus and northern Iraq. The ceremony was followed by a visit to Merjan offices, where the Iraqi tour organizer and Cyprus Airways signed an agreement.

Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Ministry of Communication and Works Alekos Michaelides, referred to the importance of the flights for strengthening business relations between the two countries.

[03] PAFOS INTERNATIONAL RALLY - FIRST DAY RESULTS

Qatars Nasser Al-Attiyah has showed winning form as international rallying returned to Cyprus on Saturday with the inaugural Pafos International Rally, round 4 of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC).

According to the organizers, Al-Attiyah rounded off a perfect day on Saturday by taking the sixth and final stage of the day, with a 23s lead over Simos Galatariotis. His outstanding drive gives Al-Attiyah an impressive overall overnight lead over Galatariotis of 4m 18.6s.
