  • [01] SPOKESMAN GOVERNEMENT DIKO

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said Monday that President Demetris Christofias firmly believes that the governments cooperation with the Democratic Party (DIKO) can continue and be even more effective.

In statements to journalists after a meeting held at the Presidential Palace between President Christofias and DIKO President and former President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian, Stephanou described the meeting as friendly and creative, saying that they discussed about the economic package, announced by the government last December, as well as about the Cyprus problem.

The Presidents position is that the cooperation with DIKO can continue and be effective for Cyprus and its citizens. We discuss, we have a dialogue and when there is a dialogue, there are prospects``, he pointed out.

[02] INTERIOR MINISTER WEST BANK - MEETINGS

Cyprus Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis had today a series of meetings with Palestinian officials, in the framework of his two-day official visit to the West Bank.

According to an official announcement, Sylikiotis was received by Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, his Palestinian counterpart Dr. Said Abu Ali, the Palestinian Deputy Minister of Interior, and a delegation of the Palestinian parliament.

During the meetings, the two sides discussed issues of common interest such as the Palestinian and the Cyprus issue. It is added that the two parties reaffirmed the excellent relations that the Republic of Cyprus and Palestine traditionally maintain.

    [03] EC T/C COMMUNITY FUNDING

European Commission approved Monday a 26.5 million euro of funding for the Turkish Cypriot community.

According to a Commissions press release, these funds will focus on measures to promote reconciliation and confidence building. Beneficiaries will include civil society organisations, schools, farmers, villages, SMEs.

``These 26,5 million euro demonstrate the continued commitment of the EU to the Turkish Cypriot community and to a Cyprus settlement. The activities implemented by the Commission with this fresh funding are reunification-driven, underlining the EU`s expectations for a successful end of the talks towards reunification of the island,`` said EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule.
