    Advisors to the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersai, will have dinner on Wednesday in the presence of Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, a UN source told the Cyprus News Agency.

    The dinner will take place at a restaurant in the UN-patrolled buffer zone in Nicosia.

    According to the same source, it is a combination of a social and working dinner, adding that such meetings took place in the past as well.

    He made it clear that it is not an official dinner thats why no media coverage arrangements have been made.

    However, he concluded, the media will not be prevented from covering the event.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities are currently engaged in UN-led direct negotiations with an aim to reunify the island.

    [02] FAMAGUSTA MAYOR - WARSAW - MEETINGS

    A delegation from Famagusta Municipality, led by mayor Alexis Galanos, held meetings with Polish officials in Warsaw, in view of the upcoming Polish Presidency of the EU next month, to inform the leadership on the plight of the occupied town of Famagusta.

    During the visit, held from 8-10 June, a photographic exhibition entitled Famagusta: A European ghost city, was organised at the Prymasowski palace, which was attended by Polish government representatives, members of the Polish Parliament, journalists, foreign diplomats and members of the Cypriot community in the country. The exhibition demonstrates the significant role of Famagusta in the history and economy of Cyprus and the current state of the city.

    Addressing the event, Galanos referred to the history of Famagusta, its destruction by Turkey and the human rights violations of the lawful residents by Turkey. He further stressed the need for Turkey to immediately implement UN and European Parliament resolutions to comply with its obligations towards Cyprus, as Turkey is trying to become a member of the EU.

    [03] MINISTER OF COMMUNICATION - EU COUNCIL

    Cyprus Minister of Communication and Works Erato Kozakou-Markoulli departs on Wednesday afternoon for Luxembourg, where she will participate in the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council, to be held on June 16, 2011.

    According to an official announcement, EU Ministers will have a debate on the White Paper on transport, issued by the Commission in March, which outlines a roadmap for a resource-efficient and competitive transport system to be achieved by 2050. The debate will be structured by a questionnaire drawn up by the presidency, focusing on the overall target, the benchmark goals and the implementing strategy set out in the White Paper.

    [04] UKRAINE - CYPRIOT AMBASSADOR

    Ambassador Evagoras Vrionides, presented his credentials Tuesday to Ukraines President, Victor Yanukovych, as the Republic of Cyprus first ambassador to the country, based in Kiev.

    Addressing the Ukrainian President, Vrionides conveyed the greetings of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and wishes for progress and prosperity of the people of Ukraine.

    He referred to the close relations between Cyprus and Ukraine and the governments decision to open an embassy of the Republic of Cyprus. He finally conveyed the wish for continued and fruitful cooperation for the benefit of both countries.
