  • [01] CYPRUS PEACE TALKS - NEW MEETING

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, meet on Thursday in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The meeting will take place at the residence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim, in the UN-protected area of Nicosia Airport, in the presence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer.

During their previous meeting on May 5, the leaders of the two communities reached an agreement on guidelines on international treaties binding on a united Cyprus.

UN-backed direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem began in September 2008. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

[02] PRESIDENT - GREEK MINISTER - EU CAP

The Cyprus problem and the EU Common Agriculture Policy were the focus of a meeting on Wednesday between President Demetris Christofias and Greek Minister of Agriculture and Food Development Costas Skandalides.

In statements after the meeting, Skandalides said they discussed agricultural issues and the cooperation between Cyprus and Greece in the sector, assuring that Greece will stand by Nicosia as regards Cyprus EU Presidency in the second half of 2012.

I can assure you that we will work together for a common agricultural policy that will promote the interests of Greece and Cyprus and secure the agricultural development of our countries during the coming years and until 2020, in a particularly crucial period, he noted.

Skandalides said that there is close and very effective cooperation between the ministries of Greece and Cyprus, adding that we support the common agriculture policy and the Cypriot EU Presidency.
