[01] CHIEF OF NATIONAL GUARD - EU MILITARY COMMITTEEMilitary operations and capability development including Pooling and sharing were at the focus of a Meeting of the EU Military Committee held here on Tuesday. Cyprus was represented by Chief of National Guard General Staff, Lieutenant General Petros Tsalikidis.In his intervention, Tsalikidis expressed the Republic of Cyprus readiness to contribute to the Pooling and Sharing process, taking into consideration its national goals. He also informed participants about the multinational, political and military exercise Argonaftis 2012 to take place during the EU Cyprus Presidency during the second half of 2012. The exercise which takes place every year in Cyprus is concerned with research and rescue, humanitarian aid provision and crisis management. Tsalikidis signed in the framework of the meeting a verbal nota regarding the participation of Ukraine to HELBROC battle group Cyprus is participating in the HELBROC Battle group with Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. [02] HIGH COMMISSIONER SOLOMON ISLANDCyprus Ambassador to Australia Yiannis Iacovou presented on Monday his credentials to the Acting Governor General and Speaker of Parliament of Solomon island Sir Allan Kemakeza as the first High Commissioner of the Republic at Solomon Islands, seated in Canberra.An official press release issued here said that Iacovou thanked Kemakeza of the support of Solomon Islands to the independency, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus as well as for the cooperation of the two countries in the UN and Commonwealth framework. He also conveyed Cyprus President Demetris Christofias wishes to the Acting Governor, the government and the people of Solomon Islands, noting that as an EU member Cyprus follows the development of EU relations with the Pacific region. Kemakeza conveyed his wishes to Cyprus President, the government and the people of Cyprus and thanked Iacovou for Cyprus support, in the framework of EU support programmes to the Solomon Islands. He also referred to the two countries cooperation in the framework of international organizations and especially in the UN and Commonwealth framework. Iacovou also met the Prime Minister of the country Danny Philip, whom he briefed on latest developments in direct negotiations for a Cyprus settlement.
