  • [01] EUROSTAT CYPRUS BUDGET DEFICIT

    Cyprus budget deficit for 2010 declined by 0.7%, whereas public debt for 2010 increased by 2.8%, figures released on Tuesday by Eurostat show.

    Cyprus budget deficit for 2010 declined to 5.3% of GDP from 6.0% in 2009, which in absolute numbers corresponds to 926 million euro, compared with 1.01 million in 2009.

    Public debt in Cyprus in 2010 rose to 60.8% of GDP from 58.0% in 2009, which in absolute numbers corresponds to 10.62 million euro compared with 9.83 million euro in 2009.

    According to Eurostat figures, Cypriot state revenue for 2010 increased to 41.3% of GDP compared to 39.8% in 2009. State expenditure also rose to 46.6% of GDP in 2010 compared to 39.8% in 2009.

    Average budget deficit in the Eurozone (EU17) for 2010 declined to 6.0% GDP compared with 6.3% in 2009, while Eurozone public debt accelerated to 85.1% GDP compared to 79.3% in 2009.

    Only three Eurozone member-states recorded budget deficit below the 3% ceiling, namely Luxemburg, Finland and Estonia.

    [02] CHINA ARMED FORCES DEPUTY CHIEF CYPRUS

    China supports Cyprus independence and territorial integrity and a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of a federation, Deputy Chief of the Armed Forces of China, General Ma Xiaotian has said.

    Cypriot Defence Minister Costas Papacostas said there is room for further cooperation between Cyprus and China even in the military field, describing the preparation of a defence agreement between the two countries as the corner stone of this cooperation.

    Papakostas met on Tuesday with a delegation of the Ministry of Defence of the People`s Republic of China, headed by General Ma Xiaotian

    According to an official announcement issued here today, the Cypriot Defence Minister welcomed the delegation to Cyprus and expressed thanks for Chinas support to Cyprus, especially in the framework of the United Nations.
