Cyprus Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou attended the 21st session of
the Joint Council for the European Union - Gulf Cooperation Council
that was held in Abu Dhabi on 20 April 2011
The EU and GCC Ministers reviewed the state of play of the bilateral
relationship. The Ministers expressed the view that further
strengthening EU-GCC relations would be an effective and valuable
contribution to regional security and stability.
In his intervention Kyprianou noted the need to deepen EU-GCC relations
and suggested the upgrading of the dialogue between them. Kyprianou
made a special reference to the need of informing the public about the
EU-GCC relations and the importance attributed to the Republic of
Cyprus to boosting contacts between EU and GCC young people and
proposed the establishment of a Young Leaders Forum.
With regard to the situation in the Middle East and Northern Africa,
the Minister stressed the need for the financial and political support
of reforms in the region, underlying that instability and leadership
void must by avoided.
