  • [01] JAPAN CYPRUS GRATITUDE

The Japanese government is extending its deep appreciation to the Government of Cyprus for its donations and support to the country following the earthquake and tsunami that hit northeast Japan on March 11.

In a press release, the Embassy of Japan in Athens extends its deep appreciation for the encouraging donations and the prompt assistance to aid the Great East Japan Earthquake provided by the Cypriot government and its people.

It also sends a message of gratitude from the Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who notes that a month after the earthquake of unprecedented scale struck Japan taking thousands of precious lives, even today, evacuation shelters are still the only refuge for more than 150 thousand people.

We are still receiving a tremendous outpouring of encouragement, prayers and support from people worldwide. We deeply appreciate the Kizuna our friends around the world have shown and I want to thank every nation, entity and you personally, from the bottom of my heart, Naoto notes.

    [02] PARLIAMENT TAX DEPOSITS

The House of Representatives unanimously voted Thursday evening a government bill imposing a 0.095% tax on deposits of banking institutions.

Members of Parliament also passed by majority motion tabled by the main opposition party, Democratic Rally (DISY) and the party participating in the Government, Democratic Party (DIKO), prolonging the imposition of the levy beyond the year 2012, while the government bill provided only for the years 2011 and 2012, aiming to collect the amount of 60 million Euros annually.

Cyprus Parliament unanimously voted a motion tabled by the Movement of Environmentalists providing that in case a banking institution transfers the special levys cost to the operational charges, it will pay a fine up to 100.000 Euros.

The amount of 70 million Euros or 60% of the total anticipated to be collected will go to the state. The remainder amount will be directed to a bank stability fund to be created by the Cypriot Central Bank according to a previous Parliament decision.
