  • [01] LEADERS DINNER

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou are holding a working dinner this evening at the residence of the UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Liza Buttenheim, in the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia.

The dinner began after 2000 local time following the arrival of the two leaders who were welcomed by UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer.

Asked what he anticipates from the dinner, President Christofias replied to journalists: it is a dinner; we will talk, so be patient and calm.

UN-backed direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem began in September 2008. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] FM CYPRUS LIBYA MEETING

New Foreign Minister of Libya Abdel Ati Al Obeidi has expressed his countrys wish for a political settlement to be achieved in Libya, during a meeting he held Thursday in Nicosia with Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou.

During the meeting, the Cypriot side put forward some proposals taking into consideration the decisions of the recent EU Foreign Ministers Council. Kyprianou told journalists after the meeting that Al Obeidi said his country would study those proposals. The meeting took place at the initiative of the Libyan Foreign Minister, who traveled earlier to Malta, Greece and Turkey.

In statements after the meeting, Kyprianou said that the Libyan FM expressed his countrys wish for the achievement of a political solution in Libya. Kyprianou stressed he conveyed the need for an immediate cease fire on behalf of all sides, in order to protect civilians.

He also conveyed the positions of the European Union and pointed out that Nicosia encourages the continuation of the efforts based on the initiative of the African Union and the road map, until a mutually agreed solution is found.
