    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou will attend a working dinner on April 14 at the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia at the residence of the UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Liza Buttenheim.

    An UNFICYP press release said that the dinner would begin at 2000 local time.

    Christofias and Eroglu are engaged in direct UN-led negotiations with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

    [02] CYPRUS MONTENEGRO DEFENCE AGREEMENT

    Montenegro wishes for a solution of the Cyprus problem that would be to the benefit of the future of the island, Minister of Defence of Montenegro Boro Vucinic has said, expressing the belief that the Cyprus problem would be solved very soon.

    Vucinic was speaking after a meeting he held Tuesday at the General Staff of the Cyprus National Guard with Cypriot Defense Minister Costas Papacostas, during which a Defense Cooperation Agreement was signed between the two countries.

    In statements after the signing ceremony, Papacostas said he informed the Minister of Montenegro about the current situation on the Cyprus issue and the course of the UN led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

    He also said they exchanged views on world peace and security and various other bilateral issues of common interest. Referring to the Defence Cooperation Agreement signed Tuesday, Papacostas said it includes the issues of security and defence policy, military cooperation in education issues, military medicine, military sport and peace and crisis management operations.

    [03] EU COUNCIL PRESIDENT CYPRUS

    Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will hold a meeting on Wednesday with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.

    The European Council President will arrive on the island Tuesday and will have a working breakfast with the President at 0800. An hour later, the two will make statements to the Press.

    [04] PARLIAMENT DELEGATION PANAMA

    A Cyprus House delegation leaves on Wednesday for Panama to attend the 124th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly to be held on April 15-20.

    The delegation will comprise MPs Nicos Anastasiades and Yiannakis Thoma. Permanent Secretary of the House of Representatives Socratis Socratous will also attend the conference of the association of the parliaments General Secretaries.

    The agenda of the Assembly includes a debates on the political, economic and social situation in the world with the overall theme of Parliamentary accountability : living up to people`s expectations, providing a sound legislative framework aimed at preventing electoral violence, improving election monitoring and ensuring the smooth transition of power, the role of parliaments in ensuring sustainable development through the management of natural resources, agricultural production and demographic change and transparency and accountability in the funding of political parties and election campaigns.
