[01] TRIO PRESIDENCY - HEALTH - COOPERATIONCyprus proposal to make regional health cooperation an EU trio presidency priority has been accepted by both Poland and Denmark, said here today Minister of Health Christos Patsalides, after a meeting he had with Polish and Danish officials, who are here for a presidency preparatory meeting.I am particularly happy that our positions and proposals have been accepted and will be part of the priorities, he said, adding that this will mean that they will also be discussed on an EU level and we hope decisions will also be made. Explaining the issue further, Patsalides said it relates to co-operation and the creation of networks with neighbouring countries in case of a pandemic or other infectious diseases. Cyprus, he said, can act as a bridge between the countries of the region and Europe, noting that at meetings he has had with his counterparts in the region it was evident that they would welcome an initiative which will bring them closer to Europe as regards health issues. Referring to the EU trio presidency, he recalled that Poland is to take over the EU presidency in June 2011 expressing at the same time his satisfaction that this meeting is the last one to take place before the presidency begins. Patsalides also said that cooperation between the three countries has been excellent. [02] PISSARIDES - GREEK ECONOMYCypriot Nobel Prize winner professor Christophoros Pissarides met on Friday in Athens with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who congratulated him on winning the economics prize in 2010, noting that it was an honour for Cyprus and Hellenism as a whole.Pissarides and Papandreou discussed prospects for cooperation in the future, as well as the financial situation in Greece. Furthermore, Pissarides said the measures Greece has taken for the recovery of the economy were in the right direction, and expressed optimism that there would be significant progress very soon. [03] MINISTER - ANTIBIOTICSMinister of Health Christos Patsalides has called on the citizens and the medical and pharmaceutical community to make a balanced use of antibiotics.Speaking on the occasion of the World Health Day, which is dedicated to the balanced and proper use of antibiotics in order to tackle the resistance of microbes, in view of the threat of passing into a pro-antibiotic era, faced by humanity, Patsalides said Cyprus and Greece, according to a 2008 study, top the list in the consumption of antibiotics among 31 European states, making it imperative to cultivate awareness among citizens and doctors on the prescription of antibiotics. According to the study, antibiotics are prescribed by 75% in the private sector, which in 2008 represented 86% of the total expenditure of 18,273,924 EUR on antibiotics. Patsalides noted that the World Health Organisation has this year set the priority of anti-microbial resistance and that states worldwide are called on to take action and measures to restrict the unnecessary use of antibiotics in order to tackle microbial resistance. [04] CYPRUS - RUSSIAN FAIRA Cypriot delegation headed by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalidis has travelled to St. Petersburg, Russia, to participate at the International Tourism Fair and cultural events organized by the authorities of St. Petersburg, Limassol Municipality and Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO).Paschalidis is accompanied by the Mayor of Limassol Andreas Christou and CTO Chairman Alekos Orountiotis. The Commerce Minister along with Christou and Orountiotis, and representatives of the authorities of St. Petersburg gave on Thursday a joint press conference on the events planned and the many advantages the Cyprus tourist product can offer to Russian tourists. On Friday the Minister of Commerce held a number of meetings with key tour operators in the region, and the Deputy Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Prohorenko.
