  • [01] UNSG - LEADERS - CYPRUS PROBLEM

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has encouraged Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to redouble their efforts to build confidence on all fronts, so that a mutually acceptable comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem can remain in sight.

The UNSG has proposed another meeting with both leaders in mid-June to review developments.

A UN press release said that the UN Secretary General spoke by telephone on Sunday with Christofias and separately with Eroglu, adding that ``in both conversations, the Secretary-General noted that there had been some convergences, particularly in the economy chapter and in the chapter on EU matters.``

``However, he said, there has been no significant progress in the other chapters`` and ``noted the election period was approaching.``

``He encouraged both leaders to redouble their efforts to build confidence on all fronts so that a mutually acceptable comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem can remain in sight. In this regard, the Secretary-General proposed convening another meeting with both leaders in mid-June to review developments,`` the press release concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. UN-backed negotiations between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus began in September 2008. The leaders met with the SG in late January in Geneva.

[02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

House President Marios Garoyian has expressed pessimism with regard to the prospects for a Cyprus settlement, due to the long standing Turkish intransigence. Garoyian met on Monday with a delegation of Greek parliamentarians who are visiting Cyprus, noting that Turkish intransigence is expressed through the submission of positions at the negotiations on the Cyprus problem which provide for a confederation and a two-state solution. He noted that the key to a settlement lies in Ankara, on which international pressure must be exerted to help find a solution the soonest possible, providing for a bizonal, bicommuncal federation with political equality, as provided by the UN relevant resolutions, that will be based on international law and EU principles and values.

Garoyian also said that Cyprus does not oppose Turkeys EU accession course, as long as Ankara fulfills its commitments towards the EU and its member states, including Cyprus. On his part, Chairman of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Greek Parliament Konstantinos Vrettos and the members of the delegation reaffirmed the unwavering support of the Greek government, parliament, the political leadership of the country and the Greek people to the struggle of Cyprus to terminate Turkeys occupation and reach a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of UN resolutions and the acquis communautaire.

Participants to the meeting also exchanged views on deepening cooperation and coordination between the two parliaments at a bilateral and international level. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Peace talks are currently underway between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities to find a mutually acceptable solution that will reunite the country under a federal roof.

[04] COMMERCE MINISTER - IRENA MEETING

̀inister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides has attended the Inaugural Meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The Agency, which so far consists of 149 countries, is based in Abu Dhabi and has appointed as Director General of the Organization for the next four years the Kenyan Adnan Z. Amin.

In his address at the meeting, Paschalides said that Cyprus feels honored and privileged to be one of the first countries to sign the statue of IRENA and to participate in this auspicious, inaugural first assembly of the Organization. He also said that Cyprus would like to be involved in the working Groups of the Organization and promote renewable energy policies through the Policy and Strategy Reports.

Paschalides pointed out that Cyprus goal regarding the use of renewable energy for 2020 is to increase the contribution of renewable energy sources in the production of electricity from 1% at the beginning of 2010 to 16% by the end of 2020. Cyprus believes that the real benefits of using renewable energy sources come not only from reducing costs but also from having environment friendly energy and from securing energy supply, the Minsiter said.

He added that the transfer of technology from developed to developing countries, and especially to isolated islands, will reduce the cost of renewable energy sources in a way that will be comparable and competitive to costs in electricity production from conventional fuels.
