  • [01] PRESIDENT - AEOLIAN PARK

The development of renewable energy sources in Cyprus is on a very good track, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Sunday, noting however that ``the production of green energy alone is not enough to solve our energy problem.``

Addressing the opening of the Aeolian Park in the area Orites of Paphos district, President Christofias said that the Government has been active in the sector of energy and that ``we undertook initiatives and worked hard and silently to achieve that which was for most unfeasible, the demarcation of Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone, signing agreements with Israel, Egypt and Lebanon.``

He said that ``in the same way we worked for the signing of the agreement with Noble Energy and it is expected that by the end of the year the people of Cyprus will know whether they own significant deposits of hydrocarbons.``

President Christofias said that ``we continue the initiatives`` and pointed out that ``the development of renewable energy sources in Cyprus is on a very good track`` with five more Aeolian parks in the pipeline and important steps in photovoltaic and biomass energy.

``This important development is, among others, a result of the policy of the Government,`` he said, adding that the measures taken and policies drafted to promote the use of renewable energy sources and saving energy ``is reflected in the great interest of the public to invest in all categories of energy technologies.``

He added that the Government has drafted a comprehensive energy policy, due to the island`s almost exclusive dependence on imported energy products and its isolation from European energy networks, noting that the main aim of this policy was to use energy efficiently and exploit renewable energy sources.

``The project we are inaugurating today will substantively contribute to efforts to utilise Aeolian energy in Cyprus and meet the aims the EU has set, so that, by 2020, 13% of the final consumption of the country is from renewable energy sources,`` he said.

    [02] GAROYIAN - CYPRUS TALKS

Talks for a solution of the Cyprus problem are at point zero, President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian said on Sunday, noting that lately the Turkish side is more provocatively and obviously trying to lead the negotiations in the direction of a confederation.

Addressing the annual national memorial service for heroes of Tsada community, in Paphos district, Garoyian said that the Greek Cypriot side ``has exhausted every margin of flexibility`` and in some cases ``has exceeded the limits,`` adding that ``any further moves in that direction would constitute suicide.``

``We have no right to accept a closure of the Cyprus problem that will not serve justice, will not terminate the occupation and settling, will not restore the unity of the state, the people and the institutions, and we have no right to accept a solution that will grant Turkey guarantor or intervention rights in Cyprus,`` he pointed out.

Garoyian said that ``of course we want a solution the soonest possible but not any solution,`` adding that ``we know the solution will be a painful compromise but it must be fair and for a solution to be fair, functional and viable, it must restore the principles of international law and safeguard the human rights of the people of Cyprus.``

    [03] CYPRUS - BASES - LIBYA

A spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence has said that no decision has yet been taken about the British Bases in Cyprus in connection with the planned operation in Libya.

Replying to CNA questions, the spokesperson said ``no decision yet about the Bases in Cyprus,`` adding that ``we are waiting for the outcome in Paris.``
