[01] PRESIDENT - ISRAEL - VISITPresident Demetris Christofias arrived in Israel for an official visit.He was received at Ben Gurion international airport by Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure Uzi Landau. The Cypriot President is accompnied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides and Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou. On Monday, President Christofias is due to hold separate meetings with President of Israel Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He will also meet Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman and visit the Holocaust Memorial ``Yad Vashem``, the Grove of Nations and the Museum of Israel. Furthermore, President Christofias will meet Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni. On Tuesday, he will have a meeting with Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos III and visit the Holy Grave site. President Christofias will also pay a visit to the Palestine National Authority to meet President Mahmoud Abbas and visit the Yasser Arafat Mausoleum where he will lay a wreath. Before flying back home, the Cypriot President will address a Cypriot - Israeli Business Forum, in Tel Aviv. [02] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS ISSUEGovernment Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has pointed out that President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has managed to free the Greek Cypriot side from the unjust claim that it does not want a solution of the Cyprus problem and to convince the international community that the Greek Cypriot side not only wants a solution but is working towards one intensively.In statements on Sunday, Stephanou noted that President Christofias has managed to break the four-year deadlock in the Cyprus problem, which was to the benefit of Turkey, and resume negotiations for a solution, based on a bizonal bicommunal federation. He added that the Cyprus problem, due to the Government`s policy, is now a priority on the agenda of the international community and the EU, and that the Government is utilising Turkey`s EU accession course to exert influence and pressure on the Turkish occupation force so that it shifts from its stance and works for a viable and functional, under the circumstances, solution. Stephanou assured that President Christofias would continue efforts for a solution the soonest possible. [03] VAROSHA - INCIDENTA member of the Famagusta Refugee Movement, Loizos Afxentiou was brought before an illegal military court in occupied Nicosia, after being arrested in the fenced-off city of Famagusta, by the occupation forces, along with a group of MEPs, civilians and two clergymen.Afxentiou will stand trial by a so-called court on Monday and is not allowed to exit the occupied territories. Former MEP Yiannakis Matsis remains in Famagusta Hospital and is expected to be court-martialed. MEP Eleni Theocharous, speaking to CNA, said she was unofficially informed about the trial without being given many details. The incident happened on Saturday morning, when four MEPs accompanied by a group of people went to Varosha in occupied Famagusta, to inspect the damage of cultural heritage in the occupied territories of Cyprus. Occupation forces released Cypriot MEP Eleni Theocharous, Polish MEPs Jaroslaw Walesa and Artur Zasada, Bulgarian MEP Mariya Nedelcheva, the Bishop of Neapolis Porfyrios, the assistant of Walesa, a priest and one more civilian, withholding Matsis and Afxentiou. [04] GOVERNMENT - INCIDENTGovernment Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that the Government continues its representations and efforts for the release of two citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, illegally captured on Saturday by the Turkish occupation regime in the area of Varosha.Stephanou said that, as soon as it became aware of the unacceptable and deplorable action of the occupation regime to illegally detain the MEPs, the Cypriot citizens and those accompanying them, the Government made the necessary representations in the direction of the UN and the EU, for their release.
