[01] LEADERS - CYPRUS TALKS
President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot
leader Dervis Eroglu are meeting today in the framework of the ongoing
UN-led negotiations, with an aim to find a comprehensive solution to
the Cyprus problem.
Their last meeting between the two leaders was held on January 12.
Todays meeting is the last one before the Geneva meeting which has been
scheduled for January 26. Since November 18, 2010 and their meeting
with UN Secretary General in New York, the leaders of the two
communities in Cyprus have met three times. The meetings scheduled for
December 21 and 28, 2010 did not take place, due to Eroglu`s heart
surgery on December 19.
The aides of the leaders, George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay, have been
meeting on a weekly basis.
President Christofias and Eroglu met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki
Moon on November 18 in New York and agreed to meet again in the
presence of the UN chief at the end of January in Geneva.
Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer has said after the last
meeting on January 12, that UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon will ask
the leaders of the two communities to maintain the momentum at the UN
led Cyprus talks, and to chart a path forward.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied
its northern third. Talks between President Christofias and Eroglu aim
to reunify the island under a federal roof.
