[01] GOVERNMENT - UNSG - TALKSThe UN Secretary General has once more clarified that there are no deadlines concerning the negotiation process, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said in Nicosia,During Saturdays press briefing, Stephanou noted that the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, responding to the UN SGs call for making progress and finding convergences, is working in a constructive way vis-a-vis the Geneva meeting. The good will of the Greek Cypriot side, Stephanou went on to say, is a given and said that he expected the other side to reciprocate in the negotiation table. Asked to comment on whether there is enough time until the Geneva meeting to improve the positions of both sides, Stephanou said that this must be regarded in light of the time available to both leaders. However, he added, that if the Turkish Cypriot side joins the effort in a constructive manner, we may be able to move forward. Stephanou was also asked about the procedure in the Geneva meeting, and responded that the two sides are always negotiating. The procedure in Geneva, he said, will be discussed with the UN SG Special Adviser Alexander Downer, the same way it happened before the meeting in New York. The Spokesman was also asked by the journalists, whether the UN SG will get more involved in the negotiation process, and responded that the UNSG mandate is very specific and is prescribed by the Security Council.
