  • [01] CYPRIOT PARTIES - KARPAS - ENVIRONMENT

Leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties have discussed the environmental catastrophe of the northern Turkish occupied Karpas area, a topic proposed by the hosting party of todays meeting, Greek Cypriot left-wing AKEL. According to a joint communique, read out by the Ambassador of Slovakia Anna Turenicova, the parties noted that the wider Karpas area is of unique environmental and cultural wealth for all Cypriots and humanity.

Recent developments in the area of Karpas undermine the ecosystem, alter the character of the area and pose limitations to the prospects of a solution to the Cyprus problem, it adds. They agreed that plans for further exploitation of the land in the region endanger the environmentally protected area, which will be included in the Natura 2000 European Union program following the comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

Political parties call for a review of policies and actions damaging environment recourses. The political parties agree that the solution of the Cyprus problem, the soonest possible, will, among other initiatives, prevent further destruction to the natural and cultural environment for the whole of Cyprus. The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of the political parties will be held on the 19th of January, at the Ledra Palace.
