[01] PRESIDENT - ECONOMY
President Demetris Christofias has welcomed the fiscal consolidation
measures agreed between the two coalition parties, ruling left-wing
AKEL and centre Democratic Party, saying they will ensure the smooth
operation of the state and the economy.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event for the 20 years of the Cyprus
Institute of Neurology and Genetics, the President said the measures
will enable the government to continue dealing with problems and follow
a fair and balanced social policy for the benefit of the ordinary
person.
He also said that by creating the conditions to contribute to state
revenue and cut unnecessary costs, there will be growth and better days
for the economy and the people.
The President pointed out that in the absence of an international
economic recession, there would not be any effects on Cyprus economy.
He added that Cyprus compared to other countries got off cheap with
very little fallout, while other economies and other people really
suffer.
