[01] SARKOZY CYPRUS - RELATIONSFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy has described the bilateral relations between France and Cyprus as excellent.Receiving the credentials of new Ambassador of Cyprus to Paris, Kornilios Korniliou, the French President asked the Ambassador to convey his warm greetings to the President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, with whom, as he said, he has a very close relation. The ceremony took place in the Elysee Palace in the presence of French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Michele Alliot-Marie. [02] CAMPAIGN REFUGEESAn awareness campaign for refugees entitled international protection with the slogan Cyprus knows: refugees concern us - Together with others, together with ourselves was launched Monday during a press conference, attended by Minister of Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis, at the House of Europe in Nicosia.The campaign is co-funded by the European Refugee Fund and the Republic of Cyprus. Head of one of the partners of the project, the Social Innovation Institute Dimitris Micharikopoulos, presented the objectives and actions of the campaign, which are to provide continuous information as to what it means recognized refugee and beneficiary of international protection. One of the objectives is also to raise awareness aiming to increase solidarity and understanding as to the needs of beneficiaries of international protection in order to enable them to participate in social, economic and cultural life and also to promote policies of the Ministry of Interior and the European Union for the protection, support and social integration of refugees. [03] CBC GOVERNOR CYPRUS ECONOMYGovernor of the Central Bank of Cyprus Athanasios Orphanides has underlined the need to consolidate public finances the soonest possible, adding that any delay in taking the necessary measures would jeopardize the economy of Cyprus.In statements Monday at a press conference during which he presented the latest macroeconomic outlook for the Cypriot economy, Orphanides said he agreed with those who believe that if no structural measures are taken soon, then the economy could be further downgraded. He stressed that the correction of public finances must have as a long-term aim to reverse the deterioration of public debt, which amounts to 800 million euro and not just to correct fiscal deficit. Referring to the long term predictions of the Cypriot economy, Orphanides said that the rate of change in real GDP will reach 0.7% in 2010, while further recovery is expected for 2011 and 2012 with the GDP reaching 1.8% and 2.4% respectively. He noted that despite the improvement, the rate of economic growth expected for 2012 will be lower than the average rate recorded in Cyprus before the world economic crisis.
