[01] CYPRUS - ISRAEL FIRES
The fire raging in northern Israel which has destroyed thousands of
acres of land and claimed the lives of 42 people is under control,
Cyprus Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA.
A third helicopter pilot was sent to Israel on Saturday night to join
the two pilots already there manning the Cyprus Police helicopter,
along with a police engineer and a Special Missions Unit policeman, as
part of an international effort to control the fire.
The Cypriot firefighting unit was the first foreign team to arrive in
Israel on Friday morning, having sent a police helicopter and a
Forestry Department aircraft. Officials of Cyprus Forestry Department
were also sent to Israel.
Katsounotos said that aircraft pilots will remain vigilant until Monday
to prevent any renewed outbreaks of the fire.
