  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - NEW YORK MEETING

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian said that President of the Republic Demetris Christofias had been under pressure in New York for a meeting between the two communities in Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the UN, but had not accepted.

``We all knew that yesterday`s meeting between the President of Republic and the Turkish Cypriot leader, in the presence of the UN Secretary General, would be a difficult meeting. We had all from the start warned about the dangers from this meeting,`` he noted.

Garoyian noted that certain officials wanted to upgrade the role of the UN to a point where the UN could submit proposals and set timeframes or even arbitration.

    [02] EUROSTAT - CYPRUS - TOURISM

Total nights spent in hotels and other collective tourism establishments in Cyprus reached 12.9 million in 2009, according to data released by Eurostat.

According to Eurostat, Cyprus was the country with the most extended high season, from May (10% of all nights spent) to October (11%). A similar pattern, although not as strongly pronounced can be seen in Germany and Malta.

In most of the member states, the number of nights spent in collective tourist accommodation in 2009 started to increase from May/June onwards, reached a peak in either July or August and then declined steadily, reflecting a high season of around three months.
