President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu meet again Monday to continue discussions on the issue of property, in the framework of UN-led direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The meeting is expected to take place at the official residence of the UNFICYP Chief of Mission in the United Nations Protected Area (UNPA) Lisa Buttenheim and is scheduled to begin in early afternoon.

As Alexander Downer, Special Adviser of the UNSG on the Cyprus problem, stated after the last meeting on October 18, in today`s meeting the two leaders will review the work of their aides on the chapter of property.

On November 18, Christofias and Eroglu will meet the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York.

Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Cyprus for a three-day visit, will be received by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias. He will have a working breakfast with Ambassadors and Representatives of member-states of the Council of Europe.

Later on he will meet with House President Marios Garoyian and Foreign Affairs Minister Markos Kyprianou. Cavusoglu will attend an official lunch hosted by the House President in his honour.

On Tuesday, Cavusuglu will participate in a round table meeting with the Primate of the Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos II and Turkish Cypriot Religious Leader Mehmet Emin Yeltekin.

    [03] CYPRIOT MPS - PAM

Cypriot members of Parliament have stressed the need to implement UN resolutions on all international issues, including Cyprus, during the 5th Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), which concluded Saturday in Rabat, Morocco.

During the discussion at the ad hoc committee on the Middle East, the Cypriot delegation condemned the role of Turkey in Cyprus and referred to the 1974 Turkish invasion, the continuing occupation and its consequences. The delegation pointed out that the Cypriot people and their leadership have been fighting for 36 years to find a viable and functional solution that serves the interests of all Cypriot citizens and promote peace and security throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.

These views caused the reaction of the Turkish delegation, which put forward the Turkish positions on the Cyprus problem.

[04] UNSG - PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - EROGLU MEETING

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, President Demetris Christofias and Dervis Eroglu, to New York for a meeting on November 18.

Upon the invitation of the Secretary-General, a meeting is scheduled to take place between the Secretary-General and the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities on 18 November in New York. The meeting is taking place in the framework of the on-going negotiation process to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, conducted by the two communities under the auspices of the United Nations, a spokesman for the Secretary General has announced.

The agenda of the meeting has not been decided.

According to a Western diplomat, the next two meetings in Nicosia between President Christofias and Eroglu and attempts to bridge the gap in the positions of the two sides on the property issue important for the successful outcome of the New York meeting.
