  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - TRIPARTITE MEETING

House President Marios Garoyian has said he has no fears over the possibility of a meeting to be held in New York between UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon, Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou, noting however that he does not consider that something substantive will come out of such a meeting but on the contrary pressures will be exerted on the Greek Cypriot side.

Garoyian noted that Turkish intransigence has become harder and the Turkish side has submitted positions which do not abide by the UN resolutions something which the UN and the international community must take into consideration - there is an effort on the part of the Turkish side to degrade the process of negotiations and there are no convergences.

Unfortunately any convergences are on secondary issues. With regard to substantive issues there is a clear divergence, a gap between the positions of the two sides, he said.

Garoyian noted that any pressures should be exerted on the Turkish side but this was not done. He said that he does not know what the aim of such a tripartite meeting is, noting that if the United Nations want to create the conditions for substantive progress in the Cyprus problem they need to note down the responsibilities of the Turkish side and urge it to change its policies.

If they want to have progress at the negotiations they must turn to the Turkish side and prove that the proposals it has submitted at the negotiating table do not abide by the UN resolutions.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. UN-led direct negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities aiming to solve the problem which are underway began in September 2008.
