Japan`s new Ambassador to Cyprus, based in Athens, Hiroshi Toda presented his credentials to President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias on Wednesday, expressing hope that a peaceful and viable solution to the Cyprus problem would be reached soon.

Receiving the credentials, President Christofias expressed gratitude for Japan`s principled position on the Cyprus problem and its intention to participate in the peacekeeping force in the event of a solution, and pointed out that the Greek Cypriot side was waiting for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side to respond positively to proposals he had recently submitted, in order to give new impetus to the negotiating process for a solution.

The Japanese Ambassador noted that, although Cyprus and Japan are geographically far apart, they have maintained excellent bilateral relations, adding that he would like to further strengthen and encourage more friendly and cordial relations through cultural events and the exchange of visits between the two countries.

Replying, President Christofias said that relations between the two countries were developed on the basis of mutual trust and sincerity and have been close and cordial since their establishment in June 1962, noting however that a lot could still be done to bring the relationship to its maximum potential.

The first Ambassador of the Republic of Montenegro, based in Athens, Ivo Armenko presented on Wednesday his credentials to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, stressing that Montenegro is fully supporting the efforts of resolving the Cyprus problem in accordance with UN resolutions.

He said that Montenegro is dedicated to its goal of becoming a member state of NATO and the EU and is fulfilling all obligations on this road.

He thanked Christofias for the support the Republic of Cyprus is giving to Montenegro on its way to the European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and noted that Montenegro is also dedicated to strengthening of friendly bilateral relations that are existing with neighbour countries, countries of the region, of the Mediterranean and of the world.
