[01] LEADERS - CYPRUS TALKSPresident Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu met in Nicosia on Wednesday to continue negotiations in the framework of the UN-led direct talks to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.The meeting took place at the official residence of the UNFICYP Chief of Mission in the United Nations Protected Area (UNPA) Lisa M. Buttenheim, in Nicosia. Peace talks resumed after a break due to the participation of the President of the Republic in the 65th session of UN General Assembly, in New York. After the last meeting, in early September, President Christofias said that ``there was an exchange of views, which led us to decide to authorise our two teams, our aides and the teams, to continue more specifically discussions on various aspects, with an aim to reach some convergences, which they will present to us when we resume in early October``. The UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said after the last meeting that he was satisfied with the results of the all-day meetings held between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus. [02] GUE/NGL - CONFERENCETen years after the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Declaration it cannot be foreseen if these goals will be achieved, said here Wednesday Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus and Chief of Mission of UNFICYP Lisa Buttenheim.Speaking at the GUE/NGL Conference held in Nicosia, Buttenheim said the Declaration concentrates on eight international development goals that all 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. They include eradicating extreme poverty, reducing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS, and developing a global partnership for development. Buttenheim referred to the statements made by General Secretary of UN that all commitments should be complied by all to achieve all goals set. She said that the global economical crisis does not help in any way and makes things even more difficult. [03] CYPRUS COINS - HISTORYEuro, pound, mils and cents legal tender of the Republic of Cyprus at various times in its turbulent history since it gained its independence from British colonial rule, in 1960.Today the euro is the legal tender of the Republic of Cyprus, introduced in January 2008, four years after the country joined the European Union. Coins and banknotes reflect the islands civilization, culture, history, flora and fauna, not to mention important landmarks that have left their imprint the 1974 Turkish invasion and EU accession in May 2004. The Central Bank of Cyprus, which prints banknotes and mints coins, has on several occasions minted commemorative coins to mark important events. [04] STELIOS AWARD - WINNERSGreek Cypriot entrepreneur Stelios Hadjioannou will announce on October 20th the five winning teams of the second annual Stelios Award for Business Cooperation in Cyprus 2010, at an evening reception hosted by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Chambers of Commerce.Members of the two øhambers will hear Stelios speak on the importance of bi-communal trade in normalizing relations between the two communities as a lead-in to the exciting announcement of this year`s winners of Stelios` Award. The ten short-listed entrepreneurial teams come from a range of disciplines, but all demonstrate island-wide entrepreneurial activity, and consist of at least one Greek-Cypriot and one Turkish-Cypriot partner. The Stelios Award for Business Cooperation in Cyprus promotes island-wide, bi-communal business cooperation between entrepreneurs by giving promising ventures the funding boost they need to grow. Stelios is personally funding the awards through the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, which is dedicated to the three E`s - Education, Entrepreneurship and the Environment.
