[01] RUSSIAN PRESIDENT - CYPRUS - OFFICIAL VISITPresident of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev arrives tonight in Cyprus for a state visit, during which Nicosia and Moscow will sign a series of bilateral agreements to further develop their relations.Medvedev, who will be accompanied by a large delegation, will be met at Larnaca Airport by Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou. The official welcoming ceremony will be held at the Presidential Palace on Thursday. The President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and the Russian President will have a tete a tete meeting, at the Presidential Palace, followed by official talks and statements to the press. They will sign the Action Plan, bilateral agreements and memoranda. The Russian President will also meet President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian and the Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II. Medvedev will inaugurate together with President Christofias the Russian Commercial Bank. The government has described the state visit by the President of the Russian Federation as an historic event that will further enhance existing excellent bilateral relations. Moreover, Cyprus Police will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the Russian President during his visit. Medvedev will depart on Thursday evening from Larnaca Airport, where the Minister of Foreign Affairs will bid him farewell. [02] FM - RUSSIA - CYPRUSRussia has always provided Cyprus with active, total and invaluable support, and discussions on the Cyprus problem with Russia are of special value, Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou has said.In an interview with the correspondent of Russian state news agency RIA-Novosti in Athens Alexey Bogatovski, in view of Thursday`s state visit to Cyprus by President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, Kyprianou said the visit is considered an expression of the longstanding friendship between the two countries. Kyprianou said the governments of the two countries were preparing the signing of a series of bilateral agreements and protocols in sectors such as economy, tourism, banking, science, education, transport and justice, which would give a new dynamic to a broad spectrum of political and financial activities. He added that Medvedev and President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias would have the opportunity to examine in depth the Cyprus problem, Russia`s relations with the EU and international issues, on which Cyprus and Russia share similar positions. [03] STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL - CYPRUS PROBLEMThe United States believes the Cypriot-owned, Cypriot-led negotiating process is the best way to achieve a just and lasting solution, Director of Southern European Affairs of the State Department Jess L. Baily has said, during an official lunch of a two-day conference, organized by the American-Hellenic Institute for the celebrations of the 50 years since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.Baily started his speech by referring to the recent opening of an exhibition at the Smithsonian entitled Cyprus: Crossroads of Civilizations and the remarks by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias on the good state of Cyprus-US relations. He reiterated a statement made by Secretary Clinton, that the status quo in Cyprus has gone on for too long. Baily added that the United States strongly supports the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the UN Good Offices Mission led by Alexander Downer. [04] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - CITIES-MESSENGERS OF PEACEThe people of Cyprus continue to experience the pain of the consequences of war and displacement, President Demetris Christofias has said, addressing the 23rd General Assembly of the International Organization Cities - Messengers of peace. He also said that as a result of this situation, following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Cypriot people will continue to struggle constantly for peace and safeguarding human rights both in Cyprus and all over the world.For us it is very important and symbolic that the Peace Messenger Cities meets here at a time when we intensify our efforts for the settlement of the Cyprus problem with a view to end Turkeys occupation, the illegal presence of Turkish settlers and the division of the country, he added. The President pledged to do everything possible to reunite Cyprus and its people, creating conditions to allow Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins live again together and build their common future. He said that issues such as Human rights for a peace world and the Respect of cultural and religious heritage are crucial in the collective effort to promote and establish peace, mutual understanding between people and respect of human dignity. President Christofias noted that these issues which constitute an open wound in Cyprus, a wound which unfortunately remains open since 1974, concern everyone.
