[03] STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The United States believes the Cypriot-owned, Cypriot-led negotiating process is the best way to achieve a just and lasting solution, Director of Southern European Affairs of the State Department Jess L. Baily has said, during an official lunch of a two-day conference, organized by the American-Hellenic Institute for the celebrations of the 50 years since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.

Baily started his speech by referring to the recent opening of an exhibition at the Smithsonian entitled Cyprus: Crossroads of Civilizations and the remarks by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias on the good state of Cyprus-US relations.

He reiterated a statement made by Secretary Clinton, that the status quo in Cyprus has gone on for too long.

Baily added that the United States strongly supports the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the UN Good Offices Mission led by Alexander Downer.

    [04] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - CITIES-MESSENGERS OF PEACE

The people of Cyprus continue to experience the pain of the consequences of war and displacement, President Demetris Christofias has said, addressing the 23rd General Assembly of the International Organization Cities - Messengers of peace. He also said that as a result of this situation, following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Cypriot people will continue to struggle constantly for peace and safeguarding human rights both in Cyprus and all over the world.

For us it is very important and symbolic that the Peace Messenger Cities meets here at a time when we intensify our efforts for the settlement of the Cyprus problem with a view to end Turkeys occupation, the illegal presence of Turkish settlers and the division of the country, he added. The President pledged to do everything possible to reunite Cyprus and its people, creating conditions to allow Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins live again together and build their common future.

He said that issues such as Human rights for a peace world and the Respect of cultural and religious heritage are crucial in the collective effort to promote and establish peace, mutual understanding between people and respect of human dignity. President Christofias noted that these issues which constitute an open wound in Cyprus, a wound which unfortunately remains open since 1974, concern everyone. I am sure that your contribution in addressing them will be decisive, he said.
