  • [01] HOUSE - ACTIVITIES

The Cyprus problem was the top priority of the House of Representatives on an international level, both for its President Marios Garoyian and the members of Parliament, who have been stressing the dedication of the Greek Cypriot side to an agreed on, functional and viable solution in the context of a bizonal bicommunal federation.

Presenting the work of the House for the last parliamentary season, Garoyian pointed out the need for the Cyprus settlement to be based on high level agreements, UN resolutions and EU principles and values.

Garoyian noted that during meetings on the international level, the intransigence of the Turkish side was stressed, given the so far unoptimistic results of the ongoing direct negotiations between the leaders of the two communities for a settlement.

He added that another point raised during meetings internationally was the fact that Cyprus supports Turkey`s EU accession course, as long as Turkey meets the criteria set and fulfills its obligations towards the EU and its member states.

    [02] MORPHOU - EVENTS

In an effort to maintain the memory of its Turkish occupied town, Morphou Municipality is organizing a number of events from 4 to 11 October.

Morphou Mayor Charalambos Pittas told a press conference Monday that the municipality is trying to maintain the memory of its occupied town and send the message everywhere that we are demanding our inalienable right to return to our occupied town and to every corner of our occupied homeland.

According to Pittas, the events have special significance due to the Turkish intransigence at the negotiating table and also because of the great number of participants at the International Association of Peace Messenger Cities (IAPMC) conference that will take place in Cyprus.

The IAPMC will be held from 5-7 October. Morphou Municipality is participating as a member of the executive secretariat and will also present the problems which Cyprus faces due to the occupation as well as other issues concerning fundamental human freedoms.
