[01] IACOVOU LIMNITIS OPENINGPresidential Commissioner George Iacovou has said that the Limnitis check point will most probably be opened on October 14.Replying to questions on the sidelines of the meeting of the National Council`s sub-committee on the property issue, Iacovou said that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will be present at the opening ceremony of Limnitis. He also said that European Commissioner for Enlargment Stefan Fule expressed the desire to attend the event, noting that he is welcome to attend. In conclusion, he said that EU has co-funded the project with 2 million euro, an amount also paid by the Cyprus Republic. He added that the project is also co-funded the US. For the past 45 years, Greek Cypriot residents in the area of Limnitis, on the northwest, have to travel to Pafos, on the western coast, and Limassol, on the south, in order to reach the capital Nicosia. Opening a crossing point at Limnitis would make this journey far shorter. It will also facilitate movement between the islands northern Turkish occupied areas and the southern government controlled part of the country. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third territory. UN - led talks are underway between the leaders of the two communities of Cyprus, President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu. [02] CYPRUS TAXATION KUWAIT SLOVENIAThe Council of Ministers approved Monday an agreement to avoid double taxation with Kuwait and Slovenia, Deputy Government Spokesman Christos Christofides announced.Following the meeting of the Ministerial Council, Christofides said that the agreement between Cyprus and the two countries will eventually lead to the deepening of economic relations and may help boost foreign investment, particularly from Kuwait. Christofides also announced the conclusion of an agreement with Libya, which provides for the settlement of pending financial obligations to Cypriot companies. Libya agreed to pay an outstanding debt of 8,5 million euro to companies from Cyprus, until March 15, 2011, Christofides said. [03] COMMISSION VAROSHAThe European Commission believes that the return of the fenced off town of Varosha to its lawful inhabitants will be one of the key elements for the achievement of a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.A Commission`s press release notes that it is clear that the return of the city of Varosha to its lawful inhabitants is due to be one of the key elements of a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, adding that it fully supports efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. It also clarifies that ``it fully supports and is ready to assist in any effort to solve the problem that could be agreed between the two leaders of the two communities(in the context of the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations) and is agreeable to the principles of the European Union, including the issue of Famagusta / Varosha. [04] CTO TOYRISM TRENDCyprus Tourism Organization Chairman Alekos Orountiotis has stressed that tourism negative trend has been reversed, adding that Cyprus can become a major transportation centre in our region.Speaking at a press conference in the context of celebrations for the World Tourism Day, Orountiotis said that the negative climate in tourism has eventually been reversed, with the arrivals to record, abeit marginally, a positive up trend until August and revenues amounting to +1.4% compared to last year in July. ``With the exception of April - which caused a severe decrease of 23% due to the volcanic ash and its domino effects across Europe - from March we have had a positive picture, with increases in arrivals of 14.8% in March, 4.7% in May, 5.5% in June, 0.7% in July and 4.3% in August,`` he said. The economic crisis, he added, ``has affected our major markets, including that of UK, where we had a reduction of 5.8%.`` ``However, other markets showed significant increases, mainly Russia with a spectacular increase of 50%`` he said.
