  • [01] PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC - CYPRUS PROBLEM

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has expressed his determination to do his utmost so that the UN led Cyprus talks lead to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Stressing that any permanent division of the island would mean destruction the President said that the struggle to free Cyprus from the Turkish occupation is tough.

We are struggling through difficult circumstances to free Cyprus from occupation and division, he said, in a speech at the inauguration ceremony of a theatre hall in the village of Palaichori.

Noting that the Greek Cypriot side does not accept the division of the island, he said that this constitutes a strong parameter of its policy, adding that the division would mean the beginning of new suffering for our homeland and our people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

The continuation of the occupation and the de facto division of Cyprus serves the interests of all those powers which aim at the division of Cyprus, the President went on to say.

In addition, he stressed his determination to continue efforts so that a solution of the Cyprus problem is reached, based on principles.

We are ready to exploit every possibility offered at the intercommunal dialogue through the procedure which our side has been following for 36 years now, he concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway between President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglou to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country under a federal roof.
