  • [01] PRESIDENT TALKS EROGLU DINNER

President Demertris Christofias said on Tuesday that the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides have decided their further action, in the framework of direct negotiations on the Cyprus problem, saying that it has been agreed to exchange documents, outline afresh their positions on the property issue and continue the discussion.

Christofias also said there will be no meeting between himself, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In statements after his meeting with Eroglu, and asked whether the negotiations resumed on a favourable note, the President replied: we shall see, adding that the climate was cordial during the meeting.

We have decided out further actions, he said and wished that omens for the negotiations will be good. We will exchange documents, he noted, adding that the two sides will outline again their positions in general terms on the issue of properties and continue the discussion.

Asked if talks will be accelerated, the President replied: I wouldnt call it intensification. We will meet three times until we leave for New York. He noted that two of the meetings will begin in the morning and continue in the afternoon while their next meeting on Friday will take place as usual, a morning meeting.

Meanwhile, President Christofias hosted Tuesday evening a dinner at his holiday residence in Kellaki village, for Turkish Cypriot Leader Dervis Eroglou and his wife.

Both leaders were accompanied by their spouses.

The dinner was also attended by the UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer, the advisers of the community leaders, George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay with their spouses, as well as other members of the leaders negotiating teams.

This was the third social encounter between the leaders of the two communities since Eroglu replaced Mehmet Ali Talat in April as the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community attended a dinner, hosted by the UN, at a local restaurant, in the UN controlled buffer zone, on May 25. On July 28, the Cypriot presidential couple attended a dinner hosted by Eroglu and his wife in the occupied areas.

The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The Cyprus talks, aiming at a solution of the Cyprus problem, resumed in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.
