  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - PAPANDREOU - CONVERSATION

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias had a phone conversation on Saturday with the Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou, during which they discussed the Cyprus problem, among other issues.

The phone conversation, which lasted around thirty minutes, was held in the context of the ongoing sharing of information established between them and their governments on matters of mutual interest.

The Greek Prime Minister briefed the President of the Republic both on the talks he had with Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and on the telephone conversation he had with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during which he raised, apart from the Middle East issue, the Cyprus issue as well.

Papandreou also informed the President of the Republic about the telephone communication he had with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

The Greek Prime Minister discussed with his interlocutors the issue of the ongoing efforts to resume talks between Israel and Palestinians, and other issues of common interest.

President Christofias briefed Papandreou on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and on the negative messages Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has been sending with his daily statements.

The also discussed ways to further promote President Christofias proposals regarding the Cyprus issue in the international arena.

The proposals are creative in nature and may give impetus to the negotiating process combining different aspects in the discussion on the Cyprus issue, but also to Turkey`s EU accession course by implementing resolution 550 concerning the area of Varosha, which calls for the transfer of the fenced off area of Varosha, in Famagusta, to the administration of the United Nations.

    [02] BAGHDATIS - CINCINNATI

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis lost 2-0 set to Roger Federer, seeded second, in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters Tournament, and is out of the games with 360 points, which bring him closer to 16th worldwide.
