  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - EROGLU - PEACE TALKS

President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu meet on Thursday in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia to continue their discussions, in an effort to find an agreed settlement that will reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

After their last meeting on July 9th, UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that the leaders have outlined a programme of further meetings.

According to Downer, they are also meeting on July 22nd and 28th, and August 4th and 10th.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who replaced Talat in April this year.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS PAPANDREOU MEETING

Cyprus and Greece have decided to coordinate their efforts with an aim to promote the three proposals for the Cyprus issue, which President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has announced last Thursday.

President Christofias announced on Thursday his proposal for a parallel discussion of three negotiating chapters of property, of territorial adjustments and of immigration, nationality, aliens and asylum.

He also called on Turkey to implement the UN Security Council resolution 550 of 1984, which provides for the return of the city of Famagusta, a city fenced-off since the 1974 Turkish invasion, to the UN, something that could allow the restoration of the city and its return to its legal inhabitants. At the same time, the Greek Cypriot side is ready for the opening of the Famagusta port under the EU for Turkish Cypriot trade.

The third proposal announced by President Christofias concerns the international conference on the Cyprus issue, to discuss the international aspect of the problem, which should be called only when an agreement has been reached on the internal aspects.
