  • [01] LEADERS - CYPRUS TALKS - NEW MEETING

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will meet today in the framework of the UN led direct negotiation process aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will meet at 1600 local time at the UN protected area of the Nicosia airport.

The last meeting on June 3, 2010, was postponed at Christofias initiative, after statements by Eroglu who questioned the basis of the talks.

In statements, Christofias had said that he asked for the postponement of the meeting with a view to avoid a crisis and a deadlock at the talks and asked the issue to be discussed by the two leaders advisers George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay.

    [02] FOREIGN MINISTER - GAERC

Gazas blockade, sanctions against Iran and Serbias accession prospects were the main issues discussed during the General Affairs and External Relations Council meeting on Monday. Cyprus was represented at the meeting by Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou. EU Foreign Ministers reviewed the situation in Gaza, especially after Israels recent military operation at international waters against a flotilla sailing at the region.

In his intervention during the meeting, Kyprianou stressed the need for the immediate termination of Gazas blockade, which deteriorates even more the humanitarian situation as regards the population there and complicates prospects for the solution of the Middle East issue. The Foreign Minister assured his EU counterparts for the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to contribute to efforts to increase aid to Gaza.

As regards the issue of Iran, Kyprianou pointed out the need for the EU to act in the framework of the UN Security Council resolution 1929 and that any sanctions decided by the EU must not be against Irans population

With regard to Serbia, Kyprianou welcomed the ratification of the EU - Serbia Stability and Association Agreement and noted that the Council must instruct the Commission to draft its opinion (avis) on Serbias application to join the EU.

    [03] HADJICOSTIS - FOURTH SUSPECT

The fourth suspect for the murder of Managing Director of ``Dias`` media group Andy Hadjicostis has been arrested in Moldavia.

Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA that the presence of an officer from the Police Criminal Investigation Office in Moldavia a week ago and his cooperation with the authorities of Moldavia proved substantive for the arrest of the fourth suspect, Gregoris Xenophontos. ``It appears that his presence there and his cooperation with the authorities of Moldavia led to the arrest of Xenophontos,`` Katsounotos said.

Katsounotos added that Xenophontos would either consent to his extradition, which means he would be in the hands of the Cypriot authorities within ten days, or he would not, which means his extradition would be sought through Moldavian courts, a procedure that could take up to forty days. The Police Spokesman noted that the Police would be in constant contact with Interpol in Moldavia regarding any developments.

Andy Handjicostis was murdered on 11 January 2010, outside his house.

    [04] CYPRUS AIRWAYS - AIRBUS

Cyprus Airways (CA), Cyprus` national carrier, received a new Airbus A320, as part of a planed fleet renewal.

Cyprus Airways announced that the new Airbus, the third A320 CA received this year, named ``Amathous`` has already begun flight operations.

The aircraft has exactly the same characteristics with the other new A320 received this year, ``Lefkosia``, and ``Aphrodite`` with 152 seats of which 20 are in Business Class.

Cyprus Airways said it will receive an additional three A320, one the coming November and another two in February 2011, completing the renewal of its fleet. The carrier believes that the replacement of the older A320s will yield spending cuts from reduced maintenance costs and reduced fuel consumption.
