  • [01] VATICAN OFFICIAL - POPE`S VISIT TO CYPRUS

Director of the Vatican`s press office Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi has said that ``peace will be the key`` of the trip of Pope Benedict XVI to Cyprus, the first by any Pope to the island and Pope Benedict`s first to a mainly Orthodox country.

Speaking at a press conference on the official visit of the Pontiff to Cyprus, from June 4 to 6, Lombardi said the island was a crossroads of cultures and religions.

Lombardi noted that the visit will emphasise unity among Christian churches, adding that Cyprus` Orthodox Church ``has good and strong relations`` with its much larger Russian counterpart.

Commenting on reactions amongst clerics in Cyprus, Lombardi dismissed the opposition as ``marginal.``

[02] ENLARGEMENT COMMISSIONER - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The solution of the Cyprus problem would facilitate the prospects of Turkey`s accession to the EU, Angela Filote, Spokeswoman for EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule, said on Tuesday.

Replying to questions on Turkey`s role in the region and the Cyprus problem, Filote noted the Commission wanted Turkey to support talks for a Cyprus settlement, and that there was reason to believe this was what Turkey wanted too.

She added that this would give Turkey`s EU accession negotiations a push, taking into consideration that eight negotiating chapters have already been put on hold due to the Cyprus problem.

``I don`t think that this will have much effect on the overall climate of the trip, which will certainly be very warm,`` he said.

    [03] G/C AND T/C PARTIES - ISRAELI ATTACK

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, which attend bicommunal meetings hosted by the Slovak embassy, condemned on Wednesday the violence used by the Israeli government against the flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, in international waters.

In a joint communique issued after their meeting today, the parties said they were pleased to hear the decision that the negotiating process on the Cyprus problem will continue from the point where it was interrupted and encouraged Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to find an early solution on the basis of the agreed framework of bizonal, bicommunal federation, with a political equality as it is defined in the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The communique, read out by the Ambassador of Slovakia Anna Turenicova, said that the leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties expressed opinions on the issue: How the political parties can contribute to the newly started ongoing negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, as proposed by the hosting party, the Turkish Cypriot Social Democratic party.

[04] OLYMPIC COMMITTEES OF CYPRUS AND CHINA - MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

Vice President and Secretary General of the Cyprus Olympic Committee Demetris Lordos and Charalampos Lottas respectively, depart on Thursday for Beijing, China, in order to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between Cyprus and China Olympic Committees.

According to an official announcement, the Memorandum will be signed in an effort the two countries to develop their cooperation in the field of Sports, and to enhance the friendly relations between the two countries.
