UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, said
here Tuesday he is looking forward to tonights dinner between the
leaders of the two communities of the island and the resumption of the
direct talks on Wednesday, expressing the view that a solution is
doable.
Speaking to reporters after being received by President of the Republic
Demetris Christofias at the Presidential Palace, Downer referred to a
dinner the UN is hosting Tuesday evening at a restaurant in the
UN-controlled buffer zone, in the capital Nicosia.
We have the dinner tonight; I am looking forward to hosting Mr
Christofias and Mr. (Dervis) Eroglu at the dinner and they will resume
the talks tomorrow, so I am looking forward to all of that and see how
it goes, he said.
Downer also said he will be meeting the new Turkish Cypriot leader
Dervis Eroglu this afternoon. Asked about the purpose of the dinner,
Downer said it is an opportunity for the two leaders to come to know
each other, they are bringing their wives together, so it is a good way
of helping to build a personal relationship between them and their
spouses.
