Serbia can count on the support of Cyprus as regards its EU aspirations, President Demetris Christofias has said, adding that this issue is a priority in its 2012 EU Presidency. In his address at an official dinner in honour of the President of Serbia, Boris Tadic, President Christofias said that Tadic`s visit to Cyprus is proof of the excellent bilateral relations, which date back to the first Conference of Non-Aligned Heads of State or Government convened in Belgrade in September 1961.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, he said that next week will mark the first official meeting with his interlocutor, the new Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu. ``We expect constructive proposals by the new Turkish Cypriot leader, as well as a reaffirmation of the agreed basis, as set out in the two joint communiques of 23 May and 1 July 2008``, he added. President Christofias said that ``it has been agreed with Mr Eroglus predecessor that the solution will be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as set out in the respective Security Council resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality``.

``The negotiation process would be for the Cypriots and by the Cypriots, without artificial timetables and arbitration, and it will aim at a mutually agreed and acceptable solution to be put forward for approval by the two communities of Cyprus in simultaneous and separate referenda``, he said. He stressed that ``this basis needs to be reconfirmed and we await the negotiations to commence in the framework of the same procedure, from the point they were interrupted in March 2010``.
