  • [01] COMMISSIONER CYPRIOT AND POLISH MINISTERS

The European Commissioner responsible for education and culture Androulla Vassiliou and Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou will hold a meeting in Brussels to discuss future policy priorities.

According to a press release, Vassiliou and Demetriou will be joined by the Polish Minister of National Education, Katarzyna Hall, and the Director-General of the Danish Ministry of Education, Torben Kornbech Rasmussen. Cyprus, Poland and Denmark will lead the Presidency of the European Union from July 2011 to December 2012.

The meeting, held at the initiative of Commissioner Vassiliou, is an opportunity for the `trio Presidency`, as it is known, to exchange ideas on their political programme during their period at the helm of the EU.

``Good preparation and coordination are key factors for ensuring that we deliver results,`` Commissioner Vassiliou said. ``The Commission will work closely with the Polish-Danish-Cyprus Presidency in all areas of my portfolio. One of our main priorities will be the implementation of the new `Youth on the Move` initiative, aimed at improving learning mobility, employability and social integration. This period will also coincide with crucial discussions on the future EU budget, so it is important that we discuss policy priorities now,`` she added.

    [02] NG CHIEF SERBIA VISIT

Lieutenant General Petros Tsalikidis, Chief of the National Guard, will pay an official visit to Serbia from 11 to 13 May, 2010, at the invitation of the Serbia Chief of Armed Forces.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Defence, during their meeting, the two Chiefs will discuss issues of mutual concern in the field of defence, in the framework of the development and enhancement of the relations between Cyprus and Serbia Armed Forces.

    [03] VOLUNTEER DOCTORS KIRGIZSTAN MISSION

A delegation by the Volunteer-Doctors Cyprus will depart for Kirgizstan on a humanitarian mission.

Head of the mission, Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Eleni Theocharous, told a press conference Monday that the situation in Kirgizstan is very critical and warned that things will worsen.

This is why our organisation has decided to send a medical delegation to Kirgizstan, she said.

Theocharous, who is also consular of Kirgizstan in Cyprus, will hold a meeting in Kirgizstan with the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Health and the President of the interim government of the country.
