  • [01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - MEETING

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem, met Monday to discuss the Cyprus issue.

The Council will meet again Tuesday and Wednesday.

During its three-day meeting, the members of the National Council will hold a broad discussion on the latest developments of the Cyprus problem and the prospects for a settlement.

The new National Council meeting comes in the wake of the ``election`` of Dervis Eroglu as the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, in statements one day after the ``presidential elections`` in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, spoke of a ``bad development.``

``Taking into consideration Eroglus declared positions against a federation and for the establishment of two independent states in Cyprus, this could cause very serious problems to the Cyprus negotiations,`` Stephanou added.

President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began on September 2008 UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The process was interrupted on March 30 ahead of the so-called ``elections.``

    [02] MINISTER OF FINANCE UKRAINE

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis, who is paying Kiev an official visit, has held a meeting with his Ukraine counterpart Fedir Yaroshenko and Deputy Finance Minister Tetyana Yefimenko.

According to an official press release, during the meeting they decided to co-organise seminars in Kiev and Nicosia on investment opportunities to promote investments between the two countries.

In the press release it is noted that the meeting with the Cypriot Minister is the first official meeting to take place after the assumption of Fedir Yaroshenkos duties.

This shows the importance Ukraine attributes to the promotion of economic, commercial and investment relations with Cyprus, the press release ends.

[03] MINISTER OF DEFENCE EU COUNCIL

EU Ministers of Defence discussed a series of issues on Monday in Luxembourg, in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council, in which Cyprus was represented by Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas.

In the framework of the meeting of the European Defence Agency board of directors, the Ministers discussed the activities of the agency for the years 2011-2013, the European Framework Cooperation, the study regarding maritime surveillance, the programme to tackle improvised explosive devices, as well as the study on defence issues.
