[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - POLAND - CONDOLENCES
President Demetris Christofias has sent a letter of condolences to the
Polish Premier and the Acting President of Poland, expressing deep
sorrow over the death of the late President of Poland, his wife and the
people killed in todays air crash. It was with utter shock that I
received the terrible news of the tragic plane crash of April 10 which
took the lives of President Lech Kaczynski, and his wife Maria, the
President says in his letters to Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Acting
President Bronislaw Komorowski.
With profound sorrow I was also informed that the Central Bank Governor
Slawomir Skrzypek, Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Franciszek Gagor, Deputy
Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer as well as other government and
military officials were included among the people who lost their lives
in the horrible crash, President Christofias notes.
On behalf of the people of Cyprus, the Government of the Republic of
Cyprus and on my own behalf, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to
the Polish people for their immense national loss, as well as my
feelings of deep personal grief to the family of President Kaczynski
and particularly to his daughter Marta, the President writes. Allow me
also to convey our grief to the relatives of the deceased who were on
board the fatal flight. Our thoughts are with them and with the people
of Poland during these tragic moments.
Concluding his letters, President Christofias says that President
Kaczynskis legacy - as a devoted leader and a leader of integrity who
tirelessly defended the rights of his country - will undoubtedly live
on in the hearts of the Polish people. His memory will be remembered
with respect by all of us who had known him.
