[01] CHRISTOFIAS - GREECE - VISITPresident of the Republic Demetris Christofias leaves for Athens on Thursday for a four-day visit where he will hold a meeting with Prime Minister George Papandreou and will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Patra University.According to the official programme of the visit, President Christofias leaves for Athens on Thursday evening from Larnaca International Airport. On Friday morning, he will hold a meeting at Maximos Palace with Prime Minister George Papandreou and will later travel to Patra to attend the unveiling of the Monument of missing Sergeant Christos Griva at Achaia Square. President Christofias will later be nominated Honorary Doctor of the Department of Primary Education of University of Patra. On Saturday, he will return to Athens to inaugurate the new premises of the Embassy of Cyprus at Xenofontos Street and attend a reception. The Cypriot President will depart from Athens for Chania, Crete later in the afternoon to attend on Sunday a memorial and political service of Eleftherios and Sofoklis Venizelou where he will also give a speech. President Christofias will return home Sunday evening. [02] PARTIES - LEDRA MEETINGLeaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, who held here today one of their regular meetings, discussed the issue of Party politics or country politics, as proposed by the host party the United Democrats.In their joint communique, read out after the meeting by Ambassador of Slovakia Anna Turenicova, they agreed that Cyprus finds itself today at a crossroads of critical and defining moments in its recent history. They also agreed that this is not the time for intra-party or inter-party politics and that this is the time to open currently uncharted yet promising ways for the Cypriots and their neighbours in eastern Mediterranean, it added. The parties expressed their support to the leaders of the two communities in their effort for a timely agreement on the reunification of Cyprus, on the basis of the agreed framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as this is defined in the relevant Security Council resolutions. [03] FINANCE MINISTER - ECONOMYMinister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis said on Wednesday that if the right fiscal measures were taken now, the growth and prosperity of the economy would be secured for many years.Addressing the annual congress of the civil servants` union, Stavrakis referred to the global financial crisis, which has adversely affected Cyprus, noting that the government has followed the best fiscal and social policy, which has minimised the adverse effects of the crisis. He noted that ``we have announced and implemented two successive packages of measures to support the real economy, exceeding 400 million EUR or 2% of the GDP, addressing sectors that have been affected the most.`` Stavrakis said that, despite pressure, social cohesion has been enhanced, adding that over the past two years increased social benefits worth 300 million EUR have been granted, while efforts are still being made to correct various structural problems.
