  • [01] GOVERNMENT - ECHR RULING

The government of the Republic of Cyprus has received a legal opinion from experts on a recent ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on property issues and President Demetris Christofias is planning a meeting to assess the situation, in addition to meetings with political parties, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said.

``On the ECHR ruling concerning the eight pilot cases of Greek Cypriots relating to their properties in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the Republic, the government has requested and has already received an opinion from an expert,`` Stephanou said.

He added that ``in order to assess and evaluate the situation, after the ECHR ruling, a meeting is being scheduled under the presidency of the President of the Republic, with the participation of the Law Office and the Presidential Commissioner.``

``The President of the Republic will also discuss the ECHR ruling with the political forces. He will also discuss further action on the matter,`` Stephanou said.

Asked if the government sees any remedies in the opinion, Stephanou noted that, ``as the President of the Republic has recently said, in such cases we must be very careful,`` adding that ``we should await the discussion.``

He also said that no date has yet been set for the meetings with the political forces, noting that this would happen soon.

Replying to other questions, Stephanou said that ``we have before us two meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leader, in the context of the bicommunal dialogue,`` adding that ``from thereon we should wait for the necessary procedures, because we need to discuss the whole issue with seriousness.``

    [02] PRESIDENT - EXHIBITIONS

Two exhibitions on energy saving and water technology and environment, Savenergy 2010 and Envirotec 2010, were opened in Nicosia by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, who pointed out that rational use of energy and encouragement to use environmentally friendly forms of energy were among the priorities of the government.

Speaking at the opening, President Christofias said the government was taking measures to increase the use of renewable energy sources from 1.9% in 2005 to 13% by 2020, and to save energy by 10% by 2016, pointing out that Cyprus was currently 95% dependent on energy, which was above the EU average.

President Christofias referred to the government`s policy to promote renewable energy sources and to save energy, and measures already implemented, such as the use of photovoltaic systems in public buildings, as well as campaigns to cultivate awareness concerning climate change.

He added that exhibitions such as Envirotec contribute towards cultivating awareness among citizens concerning the environment and the promotion of technologies and services which protect the environment. President Christofias also referred to the government`s strategy on the environment, adding that measures have already produced successful results.
