  • [01] QUEEN OF SPAIN - CYPRUS

    The Queen of Spain Sofia will visit Cyprus, at the initiative of Nicosia Municipality and the Pierides Foundation.

    She will attend the opening of the exhibition Miro of Majocra of the great Spanish artist Joan Miro at Nicosia Municipal Art Centre, on March 10 in the presence of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias.

    The exhibition is organized by Nicosia Municipal Art Centre, Pierides Foundation, Cultural Services of Education and Culture, the Pilar i Joan Miro Foundation of Mallorca and the Telloglio Institution and Fine Arts Foundation of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in cooperation with the Government of Spain, the Spanish Organization for the Promotion of Spanish Cultural Actions Abroad (SEACEX) and that support of Cyprus Tourist Organization and it will last until May 30.

    The exhibition is presented in the framework of the EU Spanish Presidency and the Spanish government is devoted on the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus.

    [02] DEFENCE MINISTER - TURKEY - NATO - CYPRUS

    Obstacles in EU-NATO relations are not institutional but the result of the behaviour of a NATO member state, Turkey, which refuses to recognise the Republic of Cyprus, Defence Minister Costas Papacostas has pointed out, speaking during an Informal Meeting of EU Defence Ministrers, in Majorca on February 24-25.

    Papacostas also said that for Cyprus the issue of Sea Policy and specifically the programmes of sea surveillance are of strategic importance since every year a large number of ships enter or exit the Search and Rescue area of the Republic.

    [03] CYPRUS - MALTA - STOCK EXCHANGES - MoU

    The Malta Stock Exchange and the Cyprus Stock Exchange have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, at the Malta Stock Exchange premises in Valletta.

    According to a press release, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Arthur Galea Salomone on behalf of the Malta Exchange and Giorgios Koufaris on behalf of the Cyprus Exchange.

    The scope of the Memorandum covers various areas of co-operation between the two exchanges, including consultation services, exchange of information, clearing and settlement issues as well as listing and mutual recognition of members.

    [04] PASCHALIDES - TOURISM

    The government and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation will continue in 2010 their targeted and intensified efforts to promote Cyprus as an attractive tourist destination, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Antonis Paschalides has said.

    Addressing the 32nd Annual Conference of the Cyprus Hotel Association (PASIXE), Paschalides said that government measures on one hand and CTO activities on the other, such as increased cooperation with important tour operators and opening up new air routes to tourists, will become our main weapons in the fight to address challenges in the tourist industry.
