  • [01] FUEL RETAILERS - STRIKE

Fuel retailers in Cyprus decided on Monday to go on an indefinite strike as of Tuesday, in a reaction to a maximum price regulation announced earlier in the day.

The government issued a decree on Monday setting maximum prices for 95 octane petrol, 98 octane and diesel, which will be in force for eight days.

The maximum price for 95-octane petrol is set at 95 cents per litre, for 98-octane at 97 cents, and for diesel at 87.5 cents.

As news of the imminent strike spread, queues began forming at petrol stations, as citizens rushed to fill up their vehicles.

    [02] CYPRUS - ISRAEL - DECLARATION

Cyprus and Israel signed a Joint Declaration on social protection and social integration.

The Joint Declaration was signed on Monday by Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous, on behalf of Cyprus, and Israeli Minister of Welfare and Social Services Isaac Herzog, who is on an official visit to Cyprus.

According to an official announcement, the declaration provides for cooperation on social protection and integration issues, focusing on vulnerable population groups of the two countries and especially people with disabilities.

The cooperation, inter alia, includes the establishment of formal channels of communication between the two ministries, the exchange of information and good practices through visits, seminars and other events, the exchange of experts, personnel training and implementation of specific programmes, cooperation and exchange of information on social security issues.

    [03] COMMISSION - GRANTS

The European Commission has announced that a total of 188 Turkish Cypriot farmers and rural enterprises have been awarded EU funding to help bring their operation in line with EU standards and best practices.

According to a press release, there are two Rural Development Grant Schemes, namely Improving Agricultural Production and Supporting Rural Enterprise, which are funded under the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, which is managed by the European Commission.

The first scheme for Improving Agricultural Production provides financial support for equipment purchase to farmers and growers in three sectors, namely dairy, crop and horticultural production. Beneficiaries will be able to improve their methods of production to reach EU standards.

The second scheme for ``Supporting Rural Enterprise`` was launched in June 2009 to provide support to small and medium enterprises in rural areas. It aims at introducing new technologies to improve production quality, environmental and occupational safety and hygiene.

    [04] BAGHDATIS - DUBAI

Cypriot tennis player Markos Baghdatis has advanced to the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Baghdatis beat Monday French player Gilles Simon with 2-0 set (7-6 and 6-4) during the first round of mens singles.
