  • [01] PRESIDENT - HOSPITAL - TESTS

The President of the Republic Demetris Christofias is undergoing medical tests in Nicosia General Hospital, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said in a statement here this evening.

Initial results show that there is no cause for concern, the statement added.

The President of the Republic felt unwell earlier this afternoon and, having contacted his personal physician, he was recommended to undergo medical tests. The President went to Nicosia General Hospital for this purpose, it added.

The medical examinations so far are negative and there is no cause for concern, the statement noted, adding that more tests will be conducted.

The head of the cardiology department at NGH Evagoras Nikolaides said medical tests so far are satisfactory and more tests will follow.

It seems his condition is the result of overwork in the past few days, Nikolaides said.

Replying to questions, he said more will be known about the Presidents condition before 2100 oclock local time (1900 GMT).

The Presidents personal physician Michalis Mina said that the President rang him at around 1430, saying he was feeling unwell. The doctor visited President Christofias at home and having examined him, recommended that he goes to the Hospital for further examination.

So far the initial results are all normal but we believe he should stay in hospital for a few hours to repeat the tests and if all is normal he will go home, he added.
