  • [01] CYPRUS - INNOVATION

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides has stressed that today entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial innovation constitute the most fundamental components of competitive economies, which aim to improve the quality and the calibre of human resources.

Addressing the award ceremony for the ``Cyprus Entrepreneurial Competition``, in Nicosia, Paschalides said that the quality of growth which emanates from the exploitation of the non tangible assets of a country is, in the modern world, by far superior to the one that emanates from the exploitation of natural wealth and has much more positive effects on the social indicators.

In this connection, and following the relevant policy of the European Union, the government of Cyprus has placed in its high priorities the transformation of its economy to a `knowledge based economy`, with the exploitation of the local human scientific potential as well as that of the diaspora which excels. We strongly believe in and we work hard for the establishment of the Science Technology Park in the pre-selected area of Pentakomo as this will prove to be a fundamental factor towards the realisation of our vision, he added.

Referring to the Cyprus Entrepreneurship Competition, Paschalides said it has been successfully organised by the University of Cyprus for seven consecutive years, aspires to encourage Cypriot and foreign students, scientists and researchers to transfer their innovative entrepreneurial ideas into leading enterprises of high technology, starting from the preparation of a business plan.

    [02] UNIVERSITY - AWARD

The Library of the University of Cyprus has received the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) award Recognised for Excellence with three stars.

The University of Cyprus Library is the first library in Cyprus or Greece to be awarded this level of distinction.

The Library has achieved the distinction, as administrative unit. This distinction is the second out of three EFQM award levels regarding the administration and management of organisations or parts of them.

This achievement is a great honor for the Library as well as the University of Cyprus, however its greatest value lies in the fact that many areas of improvement have been identified for which the Library has either taken action or will do so immediately, a University press release says.

    [03] BAGHDATIS - AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open.

Baghdatis, No 31 seed, fought back from two sets down to advance to the third round after beating Spanish David Ferrer, No 18 seed, in a match which lasted more than four hours.

    The sets 4-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 and 6-1.

The Cypriot tennis champion will face in the fourth round the winner of the match between Australian Lleyton Hewitt and US Donald Young.
