Andy Hadjicostis, managing director of the DIAS media group, which includes Sigma TV, was murdered Monday evening in Nicosia.

Hadjicostis, 42, was getting out of his car at around 20:45 when a man wearing a helmet shot him twice with a shotgun at close range. The gunman then escaped on a powerful motorcycle driven by another man.

Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA that Hadjicostis had been ambushed outside his home in Engomi in close proximity to the US Embassy.

The scene of the crime is still cordoned off and is being examined by forensic experts.

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias deplored the crime and expressed his condolences to Hadjicostis` family.

He also said he believed that the Police would do their outmost to solve the hideous crime.

Politicians and other officials have also condemned the murder.
