  • [01] LEADERS - INTENSIVE TALKS - BEGIN

President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began on 10:00 local time their first meeting of the intensive round of talks, in the context of the ongoing UN-led negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The intensive round is being held at the official residence of UNFICYP Chief of Mission in the UN Protected Area in two phases. The first round of meetings will take place on 11th, 12th and 13th of January, and the second on the 25th, 26th and 27th of January.

Speaking after the meeting between the two leaders held on January 4th, the UN Secretary Generals Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that during the intensive talks the focus will be very much on governance and power-sharing, the economy, EU matters and the property issue.

The intensive talks begin at the backdrop of the proposals submitted by the Turkish Cypriot side, which have been described by the Greek Cypriot side as ``unacceptable.``

``These proposals cannot form the basis for discussion, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Sunday, after a two-hour meeting of parliamentary party leaders, chaired by President Demetris Christofias.

The two leaders have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
