[01] LEADERS MEETING
The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic
of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali
Talat, will meet at 3 oclock on Monday afternoon, in the framework of
direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
During their last meeting, which took place on December 14, Christofias
and Talat talked about the upcoming meetings which are going to occur
over the next month.
UN Secretary Generals Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer said
after the last meeting that the two leaders discussed the way forward,
how they are going to handle meetings over the next few weeks.
This is the last meeting of the two leaders, in the framework of the
direct talks, for the year. The first meeting of 2010 will be held on
January 4.
President Christofias and Talat began talks in September 2008, under UN
auspices, to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied
its northern third.
