[01] PRESIDENT - UN CONFERENCE - COPENHAGENThe President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, who has left for Copenhagen to attend the UN Conference on climate change, has expressed hope that the decisions to be taken on climate change will lead to the right direction to save the planet and humanity at large.Speaking before departure, at Larnaca Airport, he said climate change has led the planet to the intensive care unit. The decisions at Copenhagen will either take humanity out of intensive care or will put it on a respirator machine. The objective is to save the planet, to take those measures which will be binding for states - in particular those states which pollute the atmosphere and have essentially led to climate change so that they will contribute to the reduction of emissions and to the provision of funds for poor developing countries to allow humanity to breath and at the end of the day be saved, the President said. There are, he noted, different views, conflicting interests and everybody is trying to reconcile them. Last night the President participated in a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace, joining other nations worldwide, in a symbolic gesture to highlight the need to save the planet. The lights went out at 2000 local time (1800 GMT) and the President received the signatures of citizens calling for the protection of the environment. ``Everybody must rise to the occasion,`` said President Christofias said standing in front of an SOS sign created by candles. [02] US COURT - GREEK CYPRIOT LAWSUIT - TURKEYA lawsuit, relating to Greek Cypriot Turkish occupied property, has been filed in the United States District Court of Columbia on behalf of three Greek Cypriots against Turkey and the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in northern Turkish occupied Cyprus. The claim amounts to 400 billion dollars and relates to the loss of use and the exploitation of their property, which has been under Turkish occupation since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The lawsuit was filed on 19 October 2009 in the Washington D.C. court by Mihalis Toumazou, Nicolas Kantzilaris and Maroula Toumpazou on their behalf and on behalf of the group consisting of all individuals who had property rights affected by the invasion and current occupation in the north of Cyprus whose number exceed 200,000 individuals. Turkey is sued as a foreign state in violation of its duty of care, arising from commercial activity. The lawsuit is based on the fact that Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and is maintaining its illegal occupation in the island with the use of American weapons, while according to US law Turkey had the duty not to use the weapons obtained from the USA in violation of international law or offensively. Persons whose rights are affected by this violation can sue Turkey in the American courts. The illegal regime in occupied Cyprus, not having recognition in the USA, will be sued on US soil as a group of people for illegal transactions, namely the use and sale of the infrastructure and property of Greek Cypriots and occupied municipalities. As explained at a press conference by the lawyer who filed the lawsuit Athan Tsimpedes, in the USA one can file a lawsuit against a foreign government through the exceptions to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, one of which is the commercial activity exception.
